EFNAR

is y our teaching EFNAR?

I mentioned in the previous entry that I had a breakfast meeting. In that meeting Jeff, the man I was talking with, mentioned an acronym that he came up with for teaching English. EFNAR - English For No Apparent Reason. Sounds like a lot of different teaching programs I know.

I googled EFNAR and found that no one else has used it in quite this way, though the urban dictionary has an amusing meaning that I was unaware of.

Added a poll, vote and tell us if you are teaching EFNAR.

Are you referring to the teacher or the students with this ‘EFNAR’?

Good question. Probably both as the teacher may be teaching English for no apparent reason due to the situation or thier lack of ambition as a teacher. And the students could be there because everyone else is doing it or because their boss or parents are requiring it.

EFNAR refers to the students. The best example of EFNAR students are university freshmen in Japan and Korea who are required to take an English conversation/oral communication class. Most just don’t want to be there. They have no intrinsic motivation, cannot see any immediate benefit to learning English, and have no reason to use English outside of English class. To make matters worse, these classes meet only once a week for 90-120 minutes. This makes it very hard for teachers to accomplish anything.

Even so, there are teachers who ARE making a difference in these less-than-ideal circumstances. I’ve met them and I applaud them. Their reasons for teaching are simple yet powerful—getting their students to like English, and helping their students feel confident about their ability to communicate in English, and encouraging their students to be willing to keep studying English (by choice).

Students will always rise to the level of their teacher’s expectations. EFNAR students are not hopeless students. But EFNAR teachers ... well, that’s something else entirely, isn’t it?
