Re-Design Complete - EFLGeek 3.0

EFL Geek 3.0!

I’ve completed the redesign of this web site and it is now live. It’s been three years since I had a new look and the last one was a template available that I just modified. This new look I created from the ground up. I hand coded everything, XHTML, CSS and Expression Engine dynamic tags. It’s really been a great learning experience for me and I’ve definitely improved my understanding of CSS.

EFLGeek 3.0 - skipping 2.0 cause geeks do that!EFLGeek 3.0 - skipping 2.0 cause geeks do that! yeah! Personally I’ve gotten a little tired of all the hype surrounding 2.0 web sites and software upgrades to 2.0.51.3.6 so I decided to have a little fun with my blog name.

Before I get into anymore details I’m going to post up a screen shot of the blog as it’s looked for the past three years so I don’t forget. The image is quite long because my monitor is 22” in vertical profile - almost no vertical scrolling for me.

old format screen shot

new format screen shot And a screen shot of the current version as i’m sure it will change in the future as well. One thing I’ve done is remove the forums and wiki since no one was using them. If enough interest were expressed, I would bring them back.

I’ve added a few little effects to the site - one that I particularly like is that now any link to a file (.pdf .pub .xls .pdf .zip) will now automatically have an icon appended to the link making it clearer what is a download and what is a web page. You can see it in action on my entry about powerpoint jeopardy.

I’ve also set up comments to use avatars. If you are a member of this site, then you can upload an avatar (100x100) or you can use a gravatar (80x80 - maximum size allowed by gravatar plugin). If you don’t do either than your comment will end up with a generic silhouette avatar. I like avatars because it can really help regular readers to identify each other visually and adds a little style and class to the comment page.

Technical Stuff

I learned a lot by reading CSS Mastery which is co-authored by Simon Collision who just happened to have created my previous look. I also ready Principles of Beautiful Web Design and various web sites. The Expression Engine forums has a very helpful community that I could not live without.

Probably my greatest assistance came from Andy Harris, an active member on the Expression Engine forums - he seemed to be paying special attention to my twitters and posts on the forums and even went so far as to offer me extensive advice via email. Through Andy I came to discovered Firebug (firefox extension) and the IE Developer Toolbar which are indispensable for web development. Andy also ensured that I learned how to add a seperate style sheet to deal with the troubles that come from internet explorer.

I’ve always enjoyed playing around with photoshop, but that has mostly been with photo touch up. Making backgrounds for the web was a learning experience. I’m sure I have a lot to learn still - I think my site might be a little slow to load as I didn’t do a particularly great job with optimizing images. The problem I had was that compression resulted in a horrible look. I need to learn how to design so that my images can be compressed without getting destroyed in the process.

There are still a couple of minor changes to be done to the look. I need to add the dynamic comment preview, as well as buttons for HTML code in comments. I haven’t yet decided if I want to go with the show/hide option with extended text that I had in the previous look. For now, I’ll just have a link to the rest of the entry.  I also want to add the ability to edit comments for a limited time after submission.

Please do come and take a look at the site and tell me what you think in the comments as well as vote in the poll.

What’s Next

What’s next for me. Next week starts final exams (2 weeks) so I’ll be busy grading. During the vacation, I will be working on a my research - writing it up for journals and potential presentations. I’ll also be preparing for KOTESOL 2008 where I’ll be presenting on extensive reading.

I also plan to further my web development/design skill by further reading in the field and practical experience. I’ll be redesigning my family site, Let’s Learn Korean, another personal site and I’l be building two new sites: my teaching portfolio site and a site for my web design business - Create Sean (say it quickly and it sounds like “creation”. Clever isn’t it?

Nice redesign. Everything looks and feels fresh… very “Web 3.0” if I may say so.

It will take some getting used to.  My first impression is that the top of the page is very busy -top being this entire post, less the comments.
Once the ‘web design blogs’ links are done, half or more of the left hand side is blank.

I think I preferred the two-column format to the current three-column format.
As I look over the blog again, I am likely to adapt and love it, but my first impression is a little negative.
I still love the content!

It all looks the same in RSS.

I’m not sure about the new blog’s policy of de-linking frequent commenters. Sometimes a blog that started with more of an ELT focus just moves on, as there’s less to say on the subject once you feel you’ve done the basics to death. But that can often be a problem for single-subject blogs: you run out of things to say unless you have no problem with repeating yourself ad nauseum. That’s what I’ve found, anyway, and so I only write about ELT when I really want to say something.

Congrats on the re-design! It’s good to see it finally up and running after having seen various stages of it along the way.

Guest authoring still an option?

Chris,
Thanks for the positive comments.

Kwandongbrian,
Change always takes getting used to. The sidebar doesn’t go all the way down the page because I don’t want my individual entries to scroll too far - this entry being unually long it’s more noticeable.

Mr. D,
no doubt it all looks the same in RSS. Just because I don’t link to your blog doesn’t mean I’m not subscribed to your feed.

G.T,
you know the offer is there - I keep reminding you every time we have coffee or talk about teaching. looking forward to your first post.

forgot to put this in the main entry. But one thing I like about the logo is that it reminds me of the cartoon I had on the original site. Anyhow I paid for the image from Istockphoto.

I also need to figure out where to add my list of buttons without having them look garish or out of place.

Congrats on the launch - I know you put a ton of work into it!

Biggest issue is the text under the comment gravitars - it’s pretty small on my laptop....

In some ways, it’s better than the old design. It seems warmer, friendlier (?). But the information is way too busy, especially the menu in the top right, along with the post titles and stickpins on each section (and tape on random quote). And I agree wiith Kwandongbrian that 2 columns would be better than the three you have. Or if you really want to keep three (planning on expanding in the future?), then narrow the two sidebars to be = 1/3 of the page with the posts taking up 2/3 of the page. Plus, I would put the sidebars on the right and content on the left as people read left to right in English.

Boyink,
Thanks for the comment, fixed the text. I’ve been saving tons of posts from your blog in my bloglines account. At the end of the semester I’ll be reading them all carefully and improving my understanding of EE.

Charles,
I agree that things got a little busy, but once I noticed that I continued to the end to get the redesign launched. I’ll probably do a re-redesign in a few months and reduce the business. Your suggestion to move the sidebars to 1/3 is good and I thought about that after I was reminded of the golden ratio.

At this point moving things around would be difficult due to the extensive use of overlapping background images - i.e. getting the coffee stains to line up correctly.

Thank you everyone for your critique - it’s very helpful in the learning process.

Nice work....

I’ve been following the design on the Expression Engine Forums and your final product is nice.

Keep it up!

Let me add that I do like the background design for the entire page and the graph paper background to the posts. The latter stands out in being different while also fitting the image of a geek. Nice design touch!

Greg,
Thanks for the praise. I’m sure with a little more practice I’ll be making slick designs. After completing redesigns of my various blogs I’ve decided to make a few EE templates to give back to the community and further build on a portfolio.

Charles,
thanks for the positive comments. I hadn’t actually considered graph paper geeky until you mentioned it. graph paper = higher math/sciences.

I arrived here by following your trackback, but the second your blog came up I have to admit I was floored.  This may be the coolest looking blog theme I have ever seen.  I’m way impressed.  The details you put in really put it over the top.  The multicolored lines between comments, the way your comments are in a different color, the thumbtacks and tape holding up the constraining boxes, really you did a phenomenal job.

Heh, if you ever decide to get into the custom Wordpress Theme business, let me know.  I’d hire you in a heartbeat.

Congrats on an amazing job!

Steve,
Thanks for the praise. I am planning on making a couple of templates to give away and will probably make them available in Expression Engine as well as wordpress. If you decide to change your look, please do get in touch with me - my web design business will go up at Create Sean in a few weeks.

for the record, I’ve been following your blog for ages though I rarely comment there.

Geek,

Great stuff! You shoulda went for Web 4.0 though!  Much improved in my opinion (but it’s the content that counts and is always top notch...). I like the colors too and also the very effective personalization. A blog should reflect a persona and yours does…

Cheers,

David

It’s clear you’ve spent a lot of time on this theme.  I especially like what you’ve done at the top.  Please, please, PLEASE get rid of the snap pop-ups, though.  They’re absolutely maddening.

Mark,
Thanks - I’m not sure how I feel about the SnapShots previews myself so I added a poll to a new entry. Vote and have your voice heard.
